LDS wins first ever AFL Championship

USP grounds, Suva -

The First ever Australian Football League (AFL) High Schools Tournament was held at the University of the South Pacific grounds last Saturday, the 8th of August 2015. The Under 19 grade competition was contested by both the girls division and boys division. DAV girls and Fiji LDS Church College created history by becoming the first two schools to win the Girls and Boys tournament respectively.

Fiji LDS Church College was crowned champions after defeating Cathedral Secondary School in the final by 43 points to 6. Isireli Qarase, a form 5 student was awarded the player of the tournament.

Ernest Vitinavulagi, the U19 coach said after the final, “The boys only got better after each game. They kept on improving as the tournament progressed.” The boys really missed Bro Carthew, the former principal, who introduced them to the sport, and is originally from Australia. The boys shared to each other how this is history in the making and they dedicate their victory to Bro Carthew.

RESULTS:

1st game: LDS 19 vs. CSS (I) 8 - Isireli Qarase , player of the match
2nd game: LDS 46 vs. JWC 0 - Jeremiah Smith, player of the match
Semi final : LDS 63 vs. CSS (II) 0 - Jone Elder , player of the match
Final : LDS 43 vs. CSS (I) 6 - Isireli Qarase, player of the match
