LDS Humanitarian Efforts in Fiji - Standfords, Vermeerens, and Roths

In Taveuni Elder & Sister Vermeeren have put on a “humanitarian” hat and helped with Cyclone Winston relief.

According to Sister Stanford, “they have been our feet on the ground since the storm.” They have distributed food, helped set up 30 tents, and delivered a total of 1,050 individual WASH kits to 7 different schools. They also helped distribute two containers of donated school furniture from “Furniture For Schools” an NGO in New Zealand.
Cooperation from start to finish. One tent will serve as both a home and church.

The Stanfords have also been busy with cyclone relief– food and tools purchased and delivered, School WASH kits delivered to the north and interior of Viti Levu, as well as Family Hygiene kits and WASH kits to the remote islands of the Lau group (Vaanuabalavu). They also have had handovers for water tanks on Vanua Levu—with the Roths, and multimedia equipment to Diabetes Fiji for their outreach and peer group training.

“To find real happiness, we must seek for it in a focus outside ourselves. No one has learned the meaning of living until he has surrendered his ego to the service of his fellow-man. Service to others is akin to duty, the fulfilment of which brings true joy.”

“Joy of Service” President Thomas S. Monson, New Era October 2009
